At Saks Incorporated, we believe we have a responsibility to improve the communities that make our business possible. This is not only where we work, this is where we live. Our Company and Associates have a long tradition of caring for our communities.
FIGHTING CANCER - Key To The Cure
During a dedicated shopping weekend in October, Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores nationwide and saks.com donate a percentage of sales to women’s cancer research and treatment organizations throughout the country. In the 12 years since the inception of the Saks Fifth Avenue charity shopping event, the Company, together with its vendors and partners, has raised more than $34 million. In 2010, Key To The Cure raised $1.2 million, which was donated to over 45 different organizations including The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®, Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Jupiter Medical Center Foundation in North Palm Beach and VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond.
ST. JUDE'S CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL
For five years, Saks Fifth Avenue participated in St. Jude's Thanks and Giving® campaign, raising over $1.7 million through customer and associate contributions. We are proud to support St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, a truly remarkable pediatric treatment and research facility, where no one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and where those without insurance are never asked to pay.
charity: Water
Saks Fifth Avenue partnered with charity: water, a non-profit organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations, in 2008 and 2009. The company raised over $700,000 through customer and associate well sponsorships and donations, sales of charity: water bracelets and T-shirts, and Mother's Day e-card sales. This money helped to build 106 wells which continue to provide clean water to citizens in Honduras, Ethiopia, and India.
ENVIRONMENTAL CARE
At Saks Incorporated, we understand that energy efficiency is not only good for the bottom line, but that it also helps to protect our environment. As a leading retailer in the U.S., we realize that our initiatives to improve our environmental performance can create tangible benefits for both our business and the communities we operate in.
Specifically, Saks Incorporated will seek to reduce overall energy consumption (measured by kilowatt hours) by 10% over 2010 comparable store and climate levels by the end of 2013. Additionally, we will continue to identify and engage in ways to positively impact the environment while driving down costs.
Saks’ environmental strategy consists of a three-pronged approach to reduce, re-use and recycle:
Reduce
- Server virtualization in our data center has reduced energy consumption by approximately 25%.
- Saks Incorporated has adopted the higher efficiency T8 fluorescent lamp, which reduces energy consumption by 30% to 40%. By the end of 2012, all of our stores will be converted to this new lighting system.
- To reduce our energy consumption even further, Saks has begun to replace halogen spots and floods in our stores with new LED lighting, which should reduce energy consumption on these fixtures by 30% to 40%.
- Saks has implemented numerous paper reduction initiatives with online paperless programs, including an online W-2 service, direct deposit, online Associate benefits enrollment and new hire processes, among many others.
- Saks is also reducing the number of printers throughout its locations, as well as installing energy efficient multi-functional copier units with double-sided printing defaults.
- Saks Direct has reduced packing fill in shipments to customers by utilizing a new box design.
- Saks is currently piloting various faucet aerators to reduce water flow in restroom sinks.
- To reduce receipt paper usage, Saks upgraded its POS system with the option to email receipts to customers directly.
Re-Use
- Hangers used in our stores are sorted, packed and re-used instead of discarded. This has reduced plastic consumption for over 270,000 hangers. Any new hangers are purchased from recycled materials wherever possible.
- 65% of all toner consumption at Saks is fulfilled by recycled toner cartridges.
- Saks Incorporated’s stores and distribution centers re-use packing peanuts, bubble wrap and other packaging materials.
- Wherever feasible, IT hardware is re-imaged and repurposed.
Recycle
- Saks recycles used electronics through corporate take back programs for cellular devices, printers, etc., as well as fluorescent and incandescent lamps.
- Saks’ distribution centers, offices and stores recycle corrugated cartons and mixed use office paper wherever possible.
- Select Saks locations utilize a single stream waste process that routes mixed dry waste (i.e., aluminum cans, plastic bottles, etc.) to special material recovery facilities for recycling. This reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills by nearly 70% per haul.
- In 2012, Saks is planning to introduce new “green” C-Fold towels made from recycled material in all stores.
